IPR & ATTACHMENTS

Interproximal Reduction (IPR)

This is the process of creating very small amounts of space between teeth in order to allow the teeth to move as needed during treatment. In order to reduce the proximal surfaces of the teeth, IPR is used to create space between them.

The treatment plan lets patients know if IPR is required. The locations of IPR for each step is marked on the tooth charts and amount  needed is listed. IPR is not needed for all cases but is recommended for a better final result. IPR can lower treatment time and cost however, you may request for IPR not to be included in treatment plans

Anchors and Attachments

Anchors (buttons or attachments, as some call them) can be thought of as small handles you place on teeth to help them move. Some teeth are shaped or positioned in a way that can be difficult for an aligner to grip. To solve this, small tooth-coloured composite-resin bumps are placed onto the facial surfaces of the teeth. This provides the aligner with something to engage.

The shape of the tooth can determine the retention the aligner has with teeth. A tooth with rounded edges may require an anchor to be placed. Otherwise, teeth movement may become difficult.

Anchors are also used to allow more complex movements to be completed, as well as to ensure more predictable results. For this reason, we recommend them for most cases. However, we will always be guided by the dentist and patient’s wishes.
